Hiking Clothing
By Clayton Kessler of TracksAndTrails.ca Adventures
Fall has returned along with more desire to hike the hills. With fall comes cooler nights as well so how do you prepare to stay warm at night but be comfortable during your day time hike? Traditionally I have always been a "jeans" kind of guy. As a collector of western novels and lover of Levi's, I figured if the cotton jeans were sufficient for the legendary cowboys they should be fine for me. After joining a local branch of Search and Rescue I soon found that the "jean" theory is not the the way to dress for warmth. Jeans are made from cotton and cotton wicks moisture and moisture makes you cold. Therefore the best hiking clothing to aquire is non-cotton clothing. The best non cotton clothing for warmth is wool. A lot of folks do not like the scratchy characteristic of wool so they stay away from it. If I am hiking in the alpine where it can get cool at night, I will put on longjohns that are made of man made materials to keep a barrier between the scratchy wool and my skin. Then put on a layer of wool for warmth. Another benefit of wool is that it is not flammable. When you are sitting around the campfire at night, this is a good thing! If you have ever watched someones nylon pants melt of them, you know what I am talking about. Having said that, if I will be hiking where there is a lot of moisture or snow then the nylon or Gor-tex outer wear is superb for keeping dry. When added over wool - you should always be warm and dry! Now just remember to add your clothing in layers so you don't sweat too much! |
